Job Hunting

Posted by on Jun 15, 2011 in 2011, Life, Work | 0 comments

Back in the days when I just started jobhunting, I was relatively unaware of where I could jobhunt and how. Turns out that there was a wealth of sites online to help me in my search for that perfect job, so I thought i’d list them down for my soon-to-be-graduated friends out there :)

1. Jobs DB.com

One of the most established job sites, Jobs DB has a huge range of large corporate companies who advertise on this job portal. like Jobstreet and Jobscentral, it has a very intuitive search engine, so it’s really easy to search for any job under the sun. It’s better known as a job portal for civil service jobs.

2. Jobscentral.com

A decidedly more hip version of JobsDB, Jobscentral is more focused on jobs available in the competitive private sector. Expect a full range of jobs from MNCs and local companies that have grown and spread abroad (e.g. Charles & Keith). Most of these jobs are mostly aimed at diploma holders & fresh grads.
3. JobStreet.com

What distinguishes JobStreet from the two former sites is its clean and simple layout. Aiming mostly at young professionals looking for a boost in their career through a career change, Jobstreet.com offers jobs from various MNCs and offers employment throughout south east asia.

4. ST701.com

The online version of the Straits Times Classifieds, ST701 offers jobs from all over the place, in every sector of the economy. If you’re looking to understand what jobs are the most in demand, ST701 is your best bet. Plus, as white collar jobs are advertised in bulk on the Saturday paper edition, it’s a good place to dig up old advertisements and check out which big employers are looking to hire.

5. Prevview.com

The newest site to emerge, I think this is the most innovating and interesting site yet! Playing on the increasing importance and viral nature of social media, Prevview is a video job portal that allows people to post “Visumés” (instead of Resumes) to gain the attention of employers. In my opinion, this is exactly what any fresh grad with little or no experience needs. With the large amount of highly qualified individuals in our society, employers aren’t just looking at paper qualifications. Now they’re looking for that extra “oomph” & for many, a Video conveys so much more of your character than a short paragraph can.

Back when I was applying for jobs, I went through many stages for my own resume. First I had a dead-boring conventional resume, which I thought was what everyone expected, then I decided to throw all caution into the wind and made it more personal and intimate. I included funny pictures of myself, talked about life experiences – and well it took me about 1 million years to cut it down to the accepted word limit, but I did it anyway! & guess what? I got almost a 100% response back from all the employers whom I sent my new resume to, which really convinced me that it’s not just the paper qualifications that sell, it’s also how you make yourself personable to your prospective employer.

& the truth is, there’s really no hard & fast rule about what your resume should look like, apart from the basics of including your academic qualifications etc. So if you’re feeling inspired and hoping to find an employer and company culture that’s in sync with your personality, check out these cool Visumes that have already been uploaded to Prevview.com :) I for one, am quite envious of all you fresh grads who have the time to spare on making a Visume… hahhaa.

Better yet, it turns out that Prevview.com is currently holding a contest for those age 18-35

All you need to do is put together a Visume – what we at Prevview call Video
Resumes – that will show and tell us why you would make a great employee.
You can sing, dance, rap, produce a movie or even sell a brick. Be it creative or
professional, do it your way and boldly express your best self.

Liking the sound of it? Ah it looks like Prevview.com is all out to grab the attention of the market, just at the moment where fresh grads are beginning to look at where the pastures are the greenest. No doubt, Prevview has a pretty sweet deal tagged onto this competition, with 50 prizes up for grabs, 43 of which are worth $10 000 (in total) and 7 will receive their desired jobs (which to me, is pretty amazing because think of all the nerve wrecking rounds of interviews you’ll get to skip!)

So here’s to the new era of social media-engineered job hunting. Pick one, pick a few, but throw away all ideas of being conventional & boring. To thine ownself be true :)

Polyvoring

Posted by on Jun 1, 2011 in 2011, Fashion | 0 comments

On Today’s Web Wednesday, I’ll be showcasing one of my favourite sites whose resources I always utilize for entries here at QuirkyChic, Polyvore! Polyvore is a great online inspiration-board maker, where one can experiment with clothes from various websites and brands. For the budget conscious, it’s a great way to “window shop” online, without busting the wallet.

One of the key great features of Polyvore is its Zeitgeist feature – presenting the most current, up to date trends and celebrities being “poly-vored”, based on what its users search for and place on their inspiration boards. This week, the top 5 celebrities are:

  1. Olivia Palermo
  2. Kate Middleton
  3. Leighton Meester
  4. Kim Kardashian
  5. Anne Hathaway

I’m surprised that Blake Lively only made it to a lowly 19. on the list, but let’s take a look at what people polyvored of these celebrities..

1. Olivia Palermo

If you’re a fan of the TV show Gossip Girl, Olivia Palermo is the living embodiment of the characters portrayed in the series. Growing up in the Upper East side, this socialite, model and actress has made waves in the style scene for always looking gorgeously chic.

That said, she has a charitable streak in her and is a member of the Friends Committee of New Yorkers for Children and is on the committee of Operation Smile, a medical charity that provides cleft lip and palate surgeries for children around the globe.

2. Kate Middleton

With the royal wedding, Kate Middleton captured the imagination and fantasies of women worldwide who have been dreaming of their own princess wedding.  Hers certainly lived up to expectations and I wasn’t surprised to see that she nearly topped the Polyvore list :)

3. Leighton MeesterUndeniably, Gossip Girl was the best career move this girl ever made, & she’s also the only natural blonde I’ve ever seen on TV who looks far better as a brunette. Despite her co-star Blake Lively’s larger success when it comes to demand from Hollywood, I won’t deny that Meester’s style on the show is far more eye catching and preppy-chic. Looks like everyone on Polyvore loves the feminine-rock look that Leighton seems so fond of carrying off, with the cute floral accents and dresses she loves, coupled with her dark eyeshadow.

4. Kim Kardashian

Perhaps best known for her skimpy pictures oozing with sexual innuendo, Kim Kardashian is also the style icon who reminded the fashion world that women with boobs and butt can be fashionable, instead of just sexy. I’m loving her muted, toned down style in both of the features!

5. Anne HathawayWith her piercing gaze and strong eyebrows, she may not be the most beautiful woman on earth, but Anne Hathaway definitely has a very distinct, strong and memorable look. I loved watching her in Ella Enchanted, she was so refreshingly charming! Watch out for her as she morphs into cat woman in the next film of the Batman series, to be released in 2012

Obsessed with Karaoke

Posted by on Mar 16, 2011 in 2011 | 0 comments

Do you love Karaoke? I only discovered it late in my university days and regretted not discovering this awesome activity earlier. It’s not so much about how well you can sing, it’s about the freedom to blast out your vocals and sing til you’re hoarse with friends who are passionately singing along with you. Well, with the exception of having your friends physically there to sing with you, I stumbled across something that comes pretty close, Karaoke Party!

Very much like the game Guitar Hero/Rock Band, Karaoke Party lets you sing along to songs (most of them free), with lyrics and it helps by “scoring” your tone accuracy. Though I’ll fully admit that the software isn’t perfect because my mic on the macbookpro doesn’t pick up all of my voice, it’s still a pretty fun experience! Moreover, you can “compete” or “challenge” your friends who have an account and it’s really fun talking to them on msn whilst singing the song. Alternatively, you can participate in “battles” with people all over the world to see how awesome you are, (or how horrible you are) haha.

so have fun! get your colleagues/friends to sing it along with you whilst you’re at work or school. It’s a pretty good stress reliever during your breaks :) Though if you’re thinking of trying this out, do prepare some throat lozenges or home remedies as it’s very addictive and you won’t realise it until your voice is nearly gone (as is mine at the moment). So don’t say you haven’t been warned!

creative food art

Web Wednesdays will be a new series by Quirkychic showcasing our favourite websites from around the web. Enjoy!

There was a great article on Life! newspaper recently about Jonathan Safran Foer and his new book, Eating Animals and while everyone is keeping to the theme of knowing about where your food comes from and perhaps, even celebrating this new move towards vegetarianism, Dominic Episcopo bucks this trend and instead, showcases his meaty pieces as art. If you are thinking of Lady Gaga in her meat outfit, think again. Episcopo showcases America’s consumerism is a subtle, tasteful (excuse the pun) way. Behold…

Still on the topic of food, Vanessa Dualib is a comic artist who uses food as her inspiration. I particularly love her egg showcases.

Aside from eggs, she also plays around with other fruits and vegetables.

You can check out her comprehensive collection here.

And now, for video of the week. If you’ve not already seen it (it’s got a whooping 17 million views and counting), it’s the Volkswagon commercial about ‘The Force.’ Utterly adorable.

Getting My Indie Fix

Web Wednesdays will be a new series by Quirkychic showcasing our favourite websites from around the web. Enjoy!

Recently I stumbled across a blog post on crafting site Craftypod, titled How Sustainable is Free? I fell in love with the idea almost immediately.

Here’s what I mean by that. Every cool blog post, every podcast, every video that you enjoy for free online comes to you because another human being chose to put their time and energy into making it. A few of these folks got paid for their efforts, but the vast majority were doing it for free.

It’s an internet phenomenon, where people make/write for free, not just for personal satisfaction, but for other’s entertainment and satisfaction as well. It’s basically a cycle of free stuff all around. However, how sustainable is it? Or as the subsequent question inevitably pops up, is the internet economy “balanced”?

Interested? Check out her series of posts here, here and here.

Browsing through Etsy, these gorgeous necklaces by White Owl caught my eye. Lace cut-out necklaces aren’t too rare nowadays, but finding an artist who artfully drapes them and arranges the pieces so aesthetically is rare. I also love how these pieces are made of new and recycled materials. Plus, they’re lightweight and beautifully accentuate the neckline.

Some of their more expensive pieces are also accentuated with beads and sequins, and personally I love the piece with the huge bow on the right. The store also makes lace-cut earrings as standalone pieces and as matching pieces to the necklaces. Prices range anywhere from $18 USD (earrings) to $60 USD (braided necklace).

If you’ve been wrecking your brains thinking of a new place to get decorative items for your home, but don’t want to go to places that mass produce items such as IKEA or COURTS, check out Etsy store la boom! for its extremely cute and eye-catching pieces, some of which are the size of a photoframe.

Better still, experiment with making one yourself! As I type, I’m already contemplating coming up with my own piece from an old photoframe and some old books with their illustrations mostly intact.

Though I’d admit that I find it pretty amusing that they used pages from a Japanese Manga for their Wonder woman and Cat Woman shadowboxes, I still find them a great conversation piece that is aesthetically pleasing. Moreover, they’re easy to display and store as well as they’re standalone pieces. Prices at their store range from $3.20 USD (gift box) to $30 USD (shadow box).
