Jill Stuart Spring/Fall 2012
I’m not one to really scrutinize the runway but Jill Stuart has definitely caught my attention this spring with its bright colours and pastel shades. Anywhere from tangerine to citron yellow, Jill Stuart’s Spring RTW is set to brighten things up.

I like that this season there’s more of a balance of having both tailors pieces and a some more flowy, chiffon-y pieces and while the colours are bright, it’s not overwhelmingly outrageous so it’s still pretty workable for your everyday wardrobe.
The print ads are just as pretty.

I like how the ad campaign has a refreshing feel to it. It’s the mixture of light pastel colours, a fresh faced model and the neutral interior of a car. I’m in love with the scalloped hem on this flowy seafoam skirt by the way. I think that colour is so on trend now. Saw a couple of sea foam items at Mango too!
And while the Spring collection is all bright and cheery, in keeping with Fall, Jill Stuart has decided to go back to black but black with a twist.

There seems to be a preference for sheer, see-through lace and chiffon with floral and jewelled embellishments. Can’t say I love the collection as much as the Spring one though. I’m only really digging the first dress on the left. The mixture of floral, lace and embellishments don’t work for me I’m afraid. It just looks too busy.
And somehow I always think of Jill Stuart as a happy sunny brand, kinda like Kate Spade in a way so this is kind of new for me. Even their 2011 Fall collection had some pop of red so this more sombre take on Fall is pretty interesting.

A Dose of Black Humour
Work is pretty much killing me (as you can tell from the awful absence of my posts) so I’ll be indulging in a little black humour this tumblr tuesday.

Some classify black humour as dark, morbid humour, but i think of it as the-world-is-screwed-anyway-so-let’s-f***-it kinda humour.
no point wasting your life when it’s not gonna get any better, right?

one of my favourites is the webcomic cyanide happiness. awesome stuff.

sigh if only i could delete the tons of papers on my desk

sorry for the depressing post, but once in awhile, everyone gets gloomy.
and speaking of gloomy… Ann Demeulemeester’s Spring 2012 RTW looks anything but Spring. (didn’t we all have this perception that spring is all about singing birds and great weather and a burst of colour?)
i do enjoy her use of mesh though.
i feel like drowning myself in endless swathes of black fabric and freaking people out so that no one will make my life difficult anymore. MUAHAHHAHA.
Optimism died somewhat last week.
I will revive it, when I myself am revived from this dark, murky mood.
til then, have a great week!

Oh, You Pretty Thing!
Lately dresses have been my favourite type of workwear, mostly because it’s really the easiest piece of clothing to just throw on in the wee hours of the morning, when one’s eyes are half-closed and mind still in dreamy sleepy-land.
Of course, not all dresses are work appropriate, but these three types of dresses – the Shirt Dress, the Draped/Pleated dress and the Belted shifts are my pet favourites :)
Plus, it looks like the designers aren’t disagreeing with me this season!

The perfect length I think, is one that hits just nicely above the knees. it’s acceptably more conservative without being too prim & proper.
In the meantime, I’ll oogle & drool, but I can’t wait for my december bonus to kick in so I can splurge away :D

Kanye West tries his hand at Fashion
Whilst browsing through the Spring 2012 collections of Paris Fashion Week, one name I didn’t expect to pop up was Kanye West, better known for his rapping skills than sewing ones.
Kanye with his signature huge sunglasses & neatly trimmed mustache.
Even more surprising, his collection consisted of clothes exclusively for women – though I would think that some of his tough & alpha male image would translate really well into clothes for the manlier man, especially with so much of men’s fashion gearing towards the skinny and androgynous at present.
All in all, I found it quite an incoherent collection. Lots of fur, leather, skinny jeans, tiny shorts, he had beaded cardigans, boob revealing tops… I think this was basically a collection of what Kanye felt the women he knew, would look good in, rather than a strong vision of a design aesthetic. I mean, the only thing I consistently saw in every picture was just basically the necklace.
That said, some critics seem to like his over-the-top use of fur (alert PETA!) & his mix of loose fit clothing with some really tight fitting clothing. It’s all definitely geared towards the male gaze. haha. funny how Carol & I both land on the same subject in our posts within the week. *bestie telepathy ftw!*
So what do you think of his collection? check out the rest on Style.com here

Jaeger London Spring 2012 RTW
Looking at the Spring 2012 has got me pretty excited, especially since it seems like the designers are moving in all sorts of directions at the moment instead of focusing their designs around one trend etc.
Cut-outs aren’t exactly new, but I love how designer Stuart Stockhart adapts the idea in different ways in each outfit. I’m particularly in love with the cardigan! Though it would totally be impractical haha.
I do love the play with cut-outs though, the teasing glimpse of skin, or a pretty contrast of colours – it’s really quite perfect when it comes to layering. Come to think of it, a cardigan made completely out of cut outs would be so easy to layer with, even in our hot tropical weather – so it’s not all that impractical after all!! (lol the justifications girls make for lustworthy pieces of clothing…)
With blazers being the “in” thing at the moment, these huge scalloped collars fascinate me. I’d love to try on any of these. Much better than the overbling-ed Balmain military jackets imho. That said, it’s really about being able to find a balance between a huge collar and the extent of the collar’s curvature. My favourite is the one on the far left. I just love the whole “navy” feel to it! I’ll definitely be looking out for such bold and curvy collars :D
Quirkychic will be a tad quiet this week as I jetset off to Tokyo! Til then, the lovely Caroline will keep you entertained :)

Vena Cava Spring 2012 RTW
I’ll be honest and admit it – I’m not a huge fan of orange. But seeing the Vena Cava looks on the runway made me think twice.
I suppose the main reason why I’ve always held back from orange (though I don’t mind a musty tangerine) is that orange just always seemed too loud, too bright, too bold. That said, I have never minded a shocking pink, & I don’t have an excuse or logical rationale for my visual prejudices.
Moreover, I’ve never really been into the whole belted trend – but this style of colour blocking really appeals to me. It’ll bring some sort of gravity (read black = more mature, serious XP ! ) to my really bright outfits. I won’t be sticking strictly with orange, but venturing into the belted land of fashion might bring either a new pop of colour to my entirely black outfits, or a muted tone to my really bright outfits.
What I really enjoyed about the runway wasn’t just the clothes, but also the quirky poses of the model. It’s so much more retro and friendlier to the eye. In my mind, it totally suited designers/best friends Lisa Mayock & Sophie Buhai’s fun and innovative take on design. Simple yet functional, these pieces are stylish and eye-catching! Plus, they look really comfortable to move in, which is more than I can say for herve leger’s bodycon dresses (pardon me but I thought those dresses were rather horrific)
It’s just the beginning, but Spring 2012 RTW looks ready to blow my mind! Stay tuned for our favourite picks of the season as the runways unfold :)
